SHADES OF GRAY
BY
CAROLINE BRIDGET GOMEZ
It was late in the
evening and the sun was setting. Everything around was gold in color. Even the waves that
were lapping gently at her ankles, the soft sand between her toes and also the beautiful
sky above her. Walking alone on a lonely stretch of beach, Brooke felt so free and
peaceful. That beach was the only place she could escape to whenever she wanted to free
her mind of office and home matters. Occasionally she stopped to pick up a piece of
driftwood and throw it far into the sea. Shading her eyes from the sun, she looked out far
at the horizon. She remembered a time when she was very young. She asked her mum what
exactly was the horizon. Her mother described it as the line where the earth met the sky.
Brooke was so taken by that explanation that she begged her mother to show her the horizon
and so her mum had brought her to that very beach and pointed it out to her. She fell in
love with it and also the beach. Since then she always came to that particular stretch
just to see the sun setting and enjoy the gentle breeze and the warm sand beneath her
feet.
Just early that morning she had
heard a piece of earth shattering news. Ridge came into her office and announced that
Taylor was pregnant his children. She was expecting twins and the doctor had confirmed
that Ridge was the father of the babies. The look on Ridge's face was one of joy and
sorrow mixed together. " Logan, I don't know what to say to you. The babies are mine
and Taylor's." Ridge had said. " You don't have to say anything Ridge. I'm truly
happy for you. " she replied. Brooke was happy for Ridge but inside, her heart was
breaking into a million pieces. "We've got to talk about this? " Ridge had said.
" I know. We can't talk here, Ridge. How about we meet at the beach this
evening?" said Brooke not daring to look at Ridge in the eye. " I'll be
there." said Ridge as he left her office.
Once the door had
closed behind him, Brooke couldn't stand it anymore. Tears fell down her cheeks. Not
wanting anyone to see her that way, she called her secretary and cancelled all her
appointments for that day. Grabbing her office jacket and her purse, she left her office
and quickly drove home. She needed to think and the beach was the only place where she
could do so. When the tears had all dried up, she quickly showered and changed into a
sleeveless floral pink dress. Brushing her long hair away from her face, she applied a
minimal amount of makeup and left the house. She then drove straight to the beach.
As she walked along the
beach, her mind was telling her a lot of things. Her conscience was constantly nagging at
her. " You've got to do the right thing Brooke. You've got to stop. You've got to
stop it now." it said. Deep down in her heart she knew it was the truth. She couldn't
do this to Ridge or even Taylor. There were also two babies coming into this world and
they will need a father. " I have to let him go. I have to." said Brooke to
herself.
Ridge was the first guy that
she ever fell in love with. He meant so much to her as he was the only one who had seen
her through all the trials in her life. How could she let him go?
There was no other alternate. Brooke
did not want to be labeled as the person who had caused the breakup between Ridge and
Taylor. There were also children to think about. Where did they fit in?
The sound of a motorbike engine
brought Brooke back to the present. She turned around to see Ridge parking his bike at the
small cliff in the end of the beach. He dismounted and came towards her. From a distance
Ridge looked at Brooke and thought to himself that she looked so lovely standing at the
edge of the water. Her blond hair looked liked a golden halo around her head. The gentle
breeze blew it back from her face and the pink dress was flapping around her knees. She
was utterly beautiful in her simplicity and Ridge's heart went out to her.
He walked towards her
and stood facing her. He took her hands in his and said, " You're a beautiful lady
Logan." Brooke smiled and answered, " Thank you. But that’s how you really
make me feel." " We have something's to discuss and I think the quicker we do it
the better it will be for the both of us." said Ridge. " I know, Ridge. Lets
walk while we discuss it." replied Brooke. Ridge nodded and started to walk along
that lonely stretch. His arm was around Brooke and they just walked for a few minutes
without saying anything.
Brooke stopped a moment later
and turned to Ridge. " I think we both know what we have to do Ridge. We can't go on
like this any longer. It's tearing at my heart." " I'm sorry Logan. I really
am." said Ridge. " Please don't say you're sorry. I couldn't bear it. We knew
this was going to happen and now that it has, the only way for us both to face it, is for
us to stop … I can't say it Ridge." said Brooke looking down as she didn't want
Ridge to see that she was crying. " Listen to me Logan." said Ridge, lifting her
chin so that he could see her face. He brushed the tears of her face with the pads of his
thumb. " I once told you Logan, that I'd never leave you. You must believe that. I
have to start over with Taylor for the sake of my children. But that doesn't mean I'd
forget all about you. I will never stop loving you." said Ridge as he cupped her face
in his hand and kissed away the tears on her face.
" I'll always be there for
you whenever you need me. You can count on that. You are and always will be my very best
friend." said Ridge as he looked at Brooke in the eye. Brooke smiled back at him and
said, " I know. I'll always love you too." " Are you going to be alright?
" asked Ridge. Brooke nodded her head and said, " You better leave now Ridge
while I can still let you go. Please don't make this hard for me." " Okay
Logan." said Ridge. As he turned to leave, he caught Brooke up against him and hugged
her. He arms went around his neck and his were holding her close. He bent his head and
kissed her long and hard. He then released her and without turning back he left the beach
to go to his bike. He heard her sobs and clenched his hands hard to keep himself from
turning back and going towards her.
Brooke watched Ridge go and the
tears ran down her face but she didn’t wipe them away.
Turning to look at the horizon, she
just realized that everything was not actually gold. They were a different color. There
were … shades of gray.
THE END
I hope you liked that
story. I didn’t like the way Brooke had to leave Ridge so I created a different ending
just to satisfy my self. I would love to hear comments from all of you so please e-mail me
at cbgomez22@hotmail.com In future I will be writing stories about Macy,
Thorne and any of the others in B&B. To my friend Asli, Thank you for creating this
fan fiction section. Love Carol.
