FROM CAROLINE BRIDGET GOMEZ

This story depicts the final weeks that Ridge and Caroline spent together before she passed away. I've always loved the romance between these two and thought of Caroline as his first and true love. I've started the story from the moment Ridge confronts Caroline about her illness and they both decide to spend their….

 LAST MOMENTS TOGETHER

The early morning sun shone in at the window, casting a warm glow on the two occupants of the king sized bed. Awakened by the rays of the sun, Ridge slowly stirred from his sleep and gazed at the small figure lying beside him. A tear slipped down his cheek and he quickly wiped it away. He remembered his promise to his wife last night.

Caroline had asked him to do one of the most difficult things that he had ever done in his lifetime. She had asked him to be brave and not to shed any tears when she dies. For her sake he promised. That was when he had realised the secret strength that his wife possessed. She was the one dying. She was the one whose life was ending and she was the one who was in pain.

But she overlooked everything about herself. She forgot her pain, her suffering and her fright and told him to be brave. He thought to himself, that if he were in her shoes, he would have been the world's worst coward. He marvelled at the inner strength she had. Ridge couldn't imagine what his life would be like without her. He didn't want to.

A soft moan sounded beside him. Ridge looked at Caroline lying asleep beside him. Her head was on his shoulder and their legs were entwined together. He bent down and placed a kiss on her slightly parted lips. Her eyes opened to reveal a set of glassy blue eyes. She smiled at him sleepily and said, " What a wonderful way to wake up?". " In that case, I will make it a point to awaken you with a kiss every morning." murmured Ridge as he continued to kiss her eyes and then placed a trail of kisses down her cheeks to her throat. Feeling more awake now, Caroline turned her face to meet his and captured his lips with hers. Their kiss was warm and loving and spoke of their love for each other.

"So…How are you feeling this morning? "asked Ridge as he gathered Caroline in his arms and tucked her more closely to his side. "Better…I feel so lazy and tired at the same time. Why do you ask?" said Caroline. " No reason. I just thought we could spend time together somewhere else. "said Ridge as he placed a kiss on the top of her head. "What do have in mind? Where can we escape to?" asked Caroline as she lay down with her head on Ridge's chest. His heartbeat was strong and steady. " I booked a villa on the beach. No one knows about this. We can go there and enjoy a few days by the beach side with nobody to bother us. Besides you need a rest."said Ridge. "Hmmm…That's sounds wonderful. I need to call the office and …." Ridge interrupted her by saying, "There's no need to worry about all that. I took care of it." "You did … How did you know that I'd accept your offer?" said Caroline shifting a little to face him. " I didn't. I took a chance. I was hoping you'd say yes."said Ridge smiling.

"I'm glad you did. I just want to be alone with you. No one else to bother us, no work to worry about. Just you and me."said Caroline. "Come on…Let's make the most of today."said Ridge as he helped Caroline out of bed. As she slowly got up from the bed and tried to put her robe on, she felt a slight nausea coming. Covering her mouth with her hand, she ran into the bathroom. Taken by surprise, Ridge quickly followed her into the bathroom and held his wife as she leaned over the sink. He slid his arm around her waist and supported her. Gently he began rubbing her back and murmuring comforting words.

Finally when she was through, she quickly splashed cold water over her face and leaned back against Ridge. " Honey… Are you all right? Should I call Dr.Hayes?"asked Ridge worriedly. "No…No, I'm fine."said Caroline weakly.

Ignoring her protest, he hooked an arm beneath her knees and carried her towards their bed. Gently laying her on the still warm sheets, he pulled the covers over her. "Be back in a minute."said Ridge as he made his way to bathroom and grabbed a towel. Making his way back into the bedroom, he knelt beside Caroline and wiped away the traces of water on her face. She was looking very pale and Ridge felt totally useless. He didn't know what else to do for her. "Ridge…" called Caroline weakly. " Caroline… don't try to talk. Just rest. I'll be here so just close those beautiful eyes and rest for a while."said Ridge as he placed a gentle kiss on her forehead and pushed a lock of hair that fell on her face. Too weak to say anything, Caroline did as she was told. She heard Ridge walking to the other side of their bed. Then she felt his arms around, holding her close and feeling totally drained of energy, she fell asleep.

A few minutes later, Ridge slowly got out of bed and made his way to the living room. Once there, he grabbed the address book and called the hospital. He asked the operator to connect him to Dr. Hayes. Once he heard her voice over the line, he told her what happened to Caroline. Over the phone he heard her say," Ridge… There isn't much I can do for Caroline. She just needs to slow down a little and get plenty of rest." "I was planning on taking her to the beach for a few days."said Ridge. "That's a good idea. I don't know if she can make it there in her condition but I can give her something to make her feel comfortable."said Dr. Hayes. "Thank you. I'll come by once Caroline wakes up."said Ridge. " Ridge, what happened to Caroline this morning will happen again on other days too. Just do what you can to make her feel comfortable. Once you get back from your vacation, I suggest the both of you come for a short session with me. It's important for the both of you to understand what really is going on."said Dr.Hayes.

"I don't know Doc…,"said Ridge. "That's all right. Think it over and discuss it with your wife. Just don't say no yet."said Dr. Hayes. "Sure…Good Bye for now."said Ridge putting down the receiver.

He walked over to the bedroom and stood at the doorway. Caroline was lying down on her side with her both her hands under her chin. She looked so pale and fragile that Ridge couldn't contain himself anymore. He stuffed his hand into his mouth to prevent himself from crying out loud. He moved towards the windows in the living room and looked out.

The tears wouldn't stop from flowing but he took a deep breath and steadied himself.

The one person that he had loved most was dying and there wasn’t anything he could do.

He felt totally useless and angry. Angry with himself mostly.

It was almost ten o'clock in the morning when he heard Caroline stirring from sleep. Quickly making his way towards her bedside he helped her to sit up. " Caroline…Do you feel like eating some breakfast."asked Ridge as he helped her with her robe. " Sure…but just something light. I don't feel like I can stomach anything heavy. I still feel slightly queasy. " said Caroline as she belted her robe and tied it firmly around her waist. Slowly she made her way towards the bathroom door. " Do you need any help?" asked Ridge.

"No. I won't be long. I'll meet you in the dining room."said Caroline. Placing a kiss on her lips, Ridge quickly left the room.

When they were both seated at the breakfast table twenty minutes later, Ridge said, "I packed up some things for the both of us. We'll just stop by the hospital before we leave." "Why…"asked Caroline as she poured herself a cup of coffee. "I spoke to Dr. Hayes."said Ridge. "Ridge…I really don't want to see her today. Besides I'm feeling better all ready."pleaded Caroline. " She just wants to give you something to make you feel less nauseous. Make you feel more energetic. I'll be with you all the time. This time you won't be alone. "said Ridge as he reached for her hands and clasped them tightly in his." Ridge… I ,"stammered Caroline as she looked down at their hands. "What is it, honey?"asked Ridge as he got out of his chair and made his way towards her. Lifting her chin, he raised her face to meet his. Her eyes were full of tears. Pulling her up from her chair, he hugged her gently to his chest. Her body shook as she cried in his arms. Trying to keep himself from doing the same, he calmed her down by holding her close and kissing her wet cheeks dry. Looking up at him, she said," Thank you for being here for me. I thought I could be brave but I guess I'm not. I'm just so afraid. So afraid of leaving you. I love you Ridge." "I love you too Caroline. From now on, I'll be there with you every step of the way. You can count on it."said Ridge as he kissed the top of her head.

"Let's finish our breakfast and be on our way."said Ridge as he held out the chair for Caroline to sit.

Once they finished, Ridge grabbed their bags and shoved them into the car booth. Then he went into the guesthouse to look for Caroline. He found her sitting beside their bedroom window. She was holding their wedding photo in her hand and the bible was on her lap. She didn't see him watching her. Slowly she got up and stuffed both the items in her handbag and grabbed a coat from the closet. "Ready…" asked Ridge from the doorway. " Yes… Let's get out of here. Have you taken care of everything?"asked Caroline. "Now don't you worry about a thing. Here…Let me help you with that coat."said Ridge. "No…I mean, I can manage."said Caroline in a rather loud voice.

Surprised at her tone, he just ushered her out and locked the main door to their house.

Soon, they were on their way to the hospital. In the car, Caroline hadn't said a word since they left their house. She just pushed the car seat back and looked out of the window. Not wanting to disturb her, Ridge didn't try to talk to her until they reached the hospital. He parked the car and got out to help her. After locking the car, he grabbed Caroline's hand and walked with her towards Dr. Hayes room.

Dr Taylor Hayes was seated behind her desk when they both entered her office. She immediately got up and welcomed Ridge and Caroline. "How are you feeling now, Caroline?" asked Dr. Hayes. " I don't feel that well. Still feeling kind of queasy. " whispered Caroline. " Why don't you follow me to the medical room? I'll give you something to calm your stomach and make you feel better." said Dr. Hayes as she helped Caroline out of her chair. Ridge got up to follow them but Caroline stopped him by saying, "Ridge …Please wait here for me." " I'm coming with you. I thought we agreed to … " " I know … but I … please Ridge. " interrupted Caroline. Dr. Hayes looked at Ridge and silently signalled him to stay behind. " We won't be long. Just a half-hour or so." said Dr. Hayes as she ushered Caroline out of the door. Feeling puzzled by Caroline's behaviour, Ridge left Dr. Hayes office. He made his way to the chemical lab to see Brooke.

Brooke's back was facing him when he entered her room. She was busy measuring some mixture and pouring it into a beaker. Her lab coat wasn't buttoned so he could see the rise of her stomach indicating her pregnancy. Suddenly she turned around and saw him.

"Ridge … What are you doing here?" said Brooke as she put down the beaker and went towards him. Ridge gave her a half smile said, "I brought Caroline to see Dr. Hayes."

"Is she all right? What happened?"asked Brooke worriedly. "She was sick this morning. She couldn't keep anything down and when I called Dr. Hayes, she told me to bring her here."said Ridge as he turned his back on Brooke so she couldn't see his face. Puzzled by his reaction, Brooke put her hand on his shoulder and turned him to face her. There were tears in his eyes and he wiped them with the back of his hand. Seeing him that way, she couldn't help but put her arms around him and held him while he cried.

After a while he, broke their embrace by saying, "Sorry Logan… I didn't mean to get so emotional." " You don't have to apologise. I'll be there anytime you need me."said Brooke as she looked at Ridge. "Thanks Logan. I really appreciate it. Caroline made me promise not to cry when she dies. I agreed but deep down, I really don't know how to put on a brave front. I don't know how to be brave for the both of us. Just now, she didn't want me to go with her to the medical room for her treatment. I told her that I wanted to be there for her." said Ridge. "Ridge, the reason she didn't want you to find out about her illness was because she didn't want to put you through all this. She didn't want you to see her or think about her dying. She loves you too much to hurt you in any way. Caroline was being brave but deep down all she wants to do is cry. You've got to understand that Ridge. "said Brooke. " What am I doing wrong, Logan? Why didn't she want me around helping her just now?" asked Ridge. " She needs your help more than anything Ridge, but you can't do everything for her. Give her some space. She is an independent woman and she wants you to see that way. She doesn't want you to see her helpless." explained Brooke as she put her hand on Ridge's shoulder.

"I'll do my best Logan. Thank you for helping me see that. We 're going away for a few days. I 'll call you soon ok. Take care."said Ridge as he kissed Brooke on her cheek. "You take care too Ridge." called out Brooke as he left the lab to go back to Dr. Hayes office.

Just as Ridge had settled down in his chair, Dr Hayes entered the room. Ridge quickly stood up and asked, " Where's Caroline? How is she?" " She's in the medical room resting. I gave her a strong dose so she's rather drowsy. She'll sleep all the way during your journey. That way when she wakes up in an hour or so, she wouldn't feel too tired out." said Dr. Hayes as she handed Ridge a bottle of pills. " I filled out her prescription. She needs to take these pills every four hours."said Dr. Hayes. " Thanks, Doc… I'll see that she takes it." said Ridge as he pocketed the pill bottle and made his way to the medical room.

Caroline was sleeping on the examination table when Ridge entered the room. Quietly he grabbed a blanket and wrapped his wife in it. Lifting her gently into his arms, he carried her toward the staff exit. Just as he reached the parking lot, Brooke saw him carrying Caroline, and she hurried over to assist him by opening the car door. Silently she helped him settle Caroline into the passenger seat and buckled the seat belt around her. Brooke looked at Ridge and said, "She looks very pale and fragile. Take care of her Ridge." "Thanks Logan. We'll come by and see you as soon as we get back. I'm sure she'll want to talk to you as you're the only one who knows about her condition. I'll call when I get back." said Ridge as he got into the driver's seat and closed the door. He waved to her as he proceeded out of the parking lot. It was almost noon and he wanted to reach the beach villa by then.

As Dr. Hayes had said, Caroline slept throughout the journey. She didn't even awaken when Ridge parked the car in front of the villa. He got out of the car and quickly went up the steps to open the front door. Making his way back to the car, he gently lifted Caroline out and carried her up the porch stairs into the master bedroom. Settling her down carefully onto the bed, he pulled of her shoes and lightly covered her with a blanket. Ridge again went back to car to get out all their bags. He put them all in the room and opened Caroline's suitcase. He dug around for a night-gown and robe. Finding a pale peach satin one, he divested Caroline of the silk suit she was wearing and pulled the night-gown over her head. Tying the sting ties if her night-gown firmly on her shoulders, Ridge kissed Caroline gently on her forehead and tucked her into the bed.

After unpacking their things, Ridge stood at the window of their room and looked out. Their villa was secluded and they had their own private stretch of beach. There were plenty of palm trees surrounding the villa. Two deck chairs were placed beside the sandy beach and a large hammock hung in front of the porch. Caroline was sure going to love this place, thought Ridge as he made his way to the kitchen. The only phone in the villa was Ridge's cellular hand phone. He had purposely asked for a villa without a phone, as he didn't want to be bothered by others. The kitchen was a fully equipped with all modern appliances to make cooking easy. The refrigerator was stocked with fresh fruit and vegetables. It was almost two in the afternoon so feeling rather hungry, Ridge quickly fixed himself a salad and a sandwich.

Ridge went back into their bedroom after lunch. Pulling up a chair beside Caroline, he sat down next to her and held her hand. He looked at his wife lying asleep. She looked so peaceful that he didn't have the heart to wake her up.

Having fallen asleep too, Ridge woke up an hour later. His legs were propped up on the bed and his feet were bare. Moreover, the bed was empty. Caroline wasn't anywhere to be seen. Wondering where she could have gone to, he stood up and walked to the doorway of their room, He spied Caroline standing at the front porch. She was looking at the beautiful scenery outside and the wind was blowing her hair back from her face. She looked so beautiful that he didn't ever want to forget that particular image of her. Making his way towards her, he slipped his arm around her waist and kissed the back of her neck. She turned around and smiled at him. Standing on tiptoes, she slipped her arms around his neck and kissed him on the mouth. Responding to her kisses, Ridge pulled his wife into an embrace and held her close to his heart.

"So … What do you think of this place?" asked Ridge as he faced Caroline. "It's simply beautiful. I love it already. Thank you for bringing me here." said Caroline smiling at him. "Anytime…Can I get you anything? You must be hungry." asked Ridge. "Oh…no. Don't trouble yourself. I was up a half-hour ago. I didn't want to wake you so I fixed my self a salad just now." said Caroline as she slid her arms around Ridge's waist. Feeling contended, Ridge held Caroline and kissed the top of her head. "Ridge…" called Caroline softly. " Yes honey…"answered Ridge. "Can we take a walk along the beach? The breeze feels wonderful and moreover I'm itching to feel the sand between my toes. I haven't been to a beach in a long while." said Caroline as she looked up at his face and smiled. "Sure we can. Let me get your robe first."said Ridge as he turned to go to the bedroom . "Never mind about that. Just hold me close so I don't feel cold." pleaded Caroline as she tugged at his hand. Smiling down at her insistence, he let himself be led by her down the porch stairs towards the beach.

Holding her close at his side, they walked along the lonely beach. Sometimes they stopped to pick up some driftwood and throw it into the water. The late afternoon sun shone down on them so it wasn't very chilly. The light breeze blew their hair around their faces and Ridge put his arm around Caroline. Pushing a wisp of her pale blond hair from her face, he looked at her and murmured, "I love you Caroline. I'll always do." " Oh…Ridge. I love you too." whispered Caroline as she leaned against him and kissed him softly on the mouth.

"Caroline, we've got to talk about this. Being silent about this matter is really eating me up."said Ridge softly as Caroline looked at him. Both of them had tears in their eyes.

" I always knew death was at our doorstep. I just never thought that it would be this soon. I want to live, Ridge. I want us to spend our lives together."said Caroline as her tears rolled down her cheeks. "I don't want to die. I'm just so afraid." she said as she looked down. Ridge placed a finger beneath her chin and lifted her face to meet his gaze. There were tears in his eyes but he refused to let them fall." I won't let you die. I can't live without you. I need you. You're part of me. A part I cherish and love so much."said Ridge. "Why is this happening to us? What did I do wrong?"asked Caroline.

Ridge held Caroline's hands in his and slowly pulled her to sit under the shade of a palm tree. He sat down and leaned against the trunk and pulled Caroline to sit between his legs. He hugged her tightly and gently wiped away the tears on her cheeks with his hand. Turning her so he could see her face, he said,"You did nothing wrong. You never did anything wrong. You certainly didn't ask for this. Don't ever blame yourself again."said Ridge. "How are we going to handle this, Ridge.?" asked Caroline as she entwined her fingers with his. " We'll take things slow. We'll live one day at a time. Every moment I spend with you, will be treasured. We'll forget the rest of the world ever exists and just concentrate on one another."said Ridge as he bent down and kissed Caroline. "Ridge…Will you do something for me?"asked Caroline. "Anything…Just ask me and I'll do it for you." said Ridge looking at her. "Let's sleep here tonight under the stars. I want us to be here all alone with only the sky as our roof. Can we? " pleaded Caroline as she smiled at Ridge. "Sure we can, Caroline. It's a private beach, there's no one around here for miles." said Ridge. " I'm feeling rather chilly now. Shall we go back to the villa? I think it's almost teatime." suggested Caroline as she struggled to get up. " That's a great idea." said Ridge. He put his arm around her and lifted her to her feet. Caroline stumbled a little but Ridge caught her arm and steadied her. Instead of allowing her to walk back, he swept her up in his arms. She happily threw her arms around his neck and laid her head under his chin.

Once they reached the villa, Ridge put Caroline down on the hammock and brushed of the sand on her feet. " How are you feeling?" asked Ridge. "I'm all right. Let me help you with the tea." said Caroline as she swung her leg down. Remembering Brooke's comment, Ridge agreed. They made their way to the kitchen. Ridge prepared the tea while Caroline set the table. Sharing the kitchen duties together, they prepared some small sandwiches and opened a jar of chocolate chip cookies. While eating, they talked about Brooke and Eric and all the others back home. "Dad doesn't know yet, Ridge. I can't tell him. He'll blame you and he'll be devastated. I can't tell him. I don't want anyone to know about me." said Caroline. " They're going to find out eventually, Caroline. You can't keep it a secret forever."said Ridge looking at her. " Not yet. I can't tell them yet. I'm not ready. " whispered Caroline. " All right. Whenever you're ready, just remember that I be by your side all the time." said Ridge.

After tea, Ridge insisted Caroline take a short nap. He gave her the medication Dr. Hayes had prescribed and waited by her bedside while she fell asleep. A little while later, Ridge began to get some things ready for their night out under the stars. He found a large rug stashed in the closet and also a hurricane lamp. Carrying them out to the beach, he spread the rug and hung the lamp on a low branch. He had also taken the huge fluffy comforter from the guestroom, so he spread it on the rug. He didn't want Caroline feeling cold at night. The sea air was quite unpredictable. Sometimes it gets quite chilly. He wanted their nights to be special and he never wanted to forget them. Grabbing a small side table to their spot, he placed a portable radio and a large thermos of hot cocoa on it. Beside it was a packet of marshmallows , two mugs and the cookie jar. Ridge then made his way back to the villa to shower and change.

Caroline was still sleeping when he got back. Not wanting to disturb her, he changed into his swim trunks and grabbed a towel from the bathroom. He decided to take a dip in the sea. The water was warm and the weather was fine. He left the villa shortly after.

Caroline suddenly awoke to find the villa empty. She spotted Ridge swimming in the sea.

There was something she had to do. Taking out their wedding photo from her handbag, she seated herself on the porch table and took out a writing pad. From her place at the porch, she could see Ridge. He waved at her and then continued to swim. She wrote a very long letter addressed to Ridge and then carefully slid it at the back of the frame between the glass and the picture. Not wanting Ridge to know about it, she put everything back in her handbag. After changing into a pair of shorts and sleeveless T-shirt, she went down to the beach to meet Ridge.

He saw her coming from a far. Ridge wondered why she was sitting at the porch table for so long but now as she joined him at the beach he didn't ask any awkward questions.

Caroline couldn't swim as it was rather strenuous, so they both contented themselves by sitting at the edge of the water and getting thoroughly wet by the splashing of the waves. They laughed out loud and played like kids in the water. By the time they left the beach, it was close to seven and they were wet and soaking. The wet sand clung to their skin making them feel rough and uncomfortable.

Ridge led Caroline into the bathroom and filled up the old claw foot tub with hot water. Dumping in half a bottle of bubble bath, he removed both their clothes and stepped into the tub. They enjoyed scrubbing each other's back and stayed in the tub for quite some time. When the water was almost lukewarm, Ridge and Caroline stepped out of it and made their way into the bedroom. Wrapping Caroline in a huge towel, he seated her in front of the dresser and helped her dry her shoulder length pale blond hair. Then seeing that she was getting quite tired out, he helped her put on a light pink satin night-gown with matching robe and slippers. Ridge slipped into a pair of black silk pyjama bottom and belted a terry cloth robe around him.

"It's almost eight o' clock. Shall we go to the beach? I have something planned for us." said Ridge smiling at Caroline. "What are you up to Ridge?" asked Caroline as she followed him towards the front door. "Now … If I tell you, it wouldn't be a surprise anymore." answered Ridge as he linked his hand with hers and they both made their way to the beach.

When Caroline saw the surprise Ridge had planned, she was touched that he would do all this just for her. The lamp was lit and it cast a warm glow on the make shift bed that Ridge had set up. The portable radio was on and it was playing a slow, soft melody.

"Oh Ridge … This is all so beautiful. Thank you. " said Caroline as tears filled her eyes. She looked up at him and he turned to her saying, " I knew you'd love it. There's no need to cry anymore. Tonight we're going to be here and enjoy every minute of it." He placed his hand under her chin and wiped away her tears with the pads of his thumb. Ridge then bent forward and placed a gentle kiss on her parted lips. May I have this dance?" asked Ridge. " Yes" whispered Caroline as he led her to edge of the water. The waves lapped at their heels and a gentle wind blew. Buried in each other's arms, they moved to the music.

The moonlight cast a warm glow on the couple dancing at the edge of the sea. They were oblivious to whatever that happened around them. Even the chill wind that blew around them went unnoticed. They held each other tightly in their arms, shielding the other from the cold wind. Their hair was whipped around their face causing their vision to be blurred. Only when Ridge felt Caroline slightly shiver, that he stopped dancing and putting his arm around her shoulders, he led her towards the blanket.ently pushing her down on the blanket, he sat next to her and asked, " Are you feeling alright honey? " "I'm just rather cold. Why don't you sit closer to me and warm me with your body heat."asked Caroline as she smiled at Ridge. "Now that sounds mighty tempting but I think a mug of hot cocoa will warm you up faster."said Ridge. " I really don't want to go back to the villa to get that."said Caroline. "You don't have to. I thought of everything." answered Ridge as he leaned towards the table and took down the thermos. The two mugs were also taken down and filled with hot cocoa.

Passing a mug to Caroline, Ridge took out a small packet from behind them. "What do you have there?" asked Caroline curiously. "Something I know you love?" said Ridge. "Come on Ridge, you know I am the curious type. Tell me." pleaded Caroline as she leaned forward and tried to wrestle it out of Ridge's grasp. "Alright…. Alright, stop tickling me and I'll tell you." said Ridge as he straightened up and arranged back their pillows. Settling himself comfortably beside his wife, Ridge turned to her and said, " Now close your eyes and open your mouth widely." instructed Ridge as he took out a marshmallow from the packet. When Caroline complied, he popped one into her mouth and asked her to chew. "Umm…Marshmallows."said Caroline when she was finally able to swallow. "How did you know I love marshmallows with cocoa?" asked Caroline. Laughing out loud, Ridge just moved closer to her and they both settled down on the rug. Occasionally they got up to refill their mugs or feed each other more marshmallows.

The night passed slowly as the chill wind died down. Pulling the comforter more closely around them, Ridge kissed a very sleepy and tired Caroline on the forehead and tucked her into their make shift bed. The sand beneath them was so soft that the absence of a mattress was unnoticed. The two pillows that Ridge had also brought were tucked firmly under their heads and as the night passed, the two silent sleepers fell into deep slumber.

Morning came and with it came the sound of sea gulls flying overhead, hunting for food scraps along the beach. The early morning sun shone brightly on the blanketed bundle on the beach. Ridge awoke to the morning sun shining brightly on his face. Turning around abruptly, he brushed against Caroline who was lying asleep beside him, thus waking her also. Sitting up on her elbows, Caroline turned to Ridge and asked, "What time is it?"

Ridge planted a kiss on her mouth, then turning to look at the watch strapped to his wrist he said, " Almost eight o'clock. How are you feeling this morning? asked Ridge looking at her. " I'm surprised to say, but I feel better this morning. No nausea and I feel rather energetic." answered Caroline as she got up. "Well that's good to hear but anyway we won't overdo anything. Remember … Dr. Hayes told you not to tire yourself." warned Ridge as he stood up and caught Caroline's arm. Turning her around to face him, he placed a kiss on her lips.

"What do you feel like doing today?" asked Ridge. " Why don't you fetch us our swimsuits. I feel like having a dip in the ocean. Not real swimming but just playing around." said Caroline as she gazed at Ridge. "Are you sure you're up to it?" asked Ridge with concern but Caroline brushed it off by saying, " Yes…I'm quite alright. Now quit stalling and hurry. Don't forget the towels too." Before rushing of, Ridge quickly grabbed Caroline and swung her around for another hearty smack on her lips. Laughing, he rushed of towards the villa. While waiting for Ridge to get back, Caroline quickly tidied up their spot by folding up the blankets and comforter. She pushed everything under the shade of a palm tree so they could use it again tonight. As she walked about searching for something to do, she noticed Ridge approaching. He was having two towels on his arm, two foldable deck chairs, and a large canopy type of beach umbrella and a thermos. Almost bent with the weight of all these things he made his way slowly back to her.

"What's all this?" asked Caroline laughing at Ridge as he struggled to put the things down before dropping any one of them. " Would you quit standing there and just help me a little here? I thought we could use these things seeing that we're going to spend more time out in the sun today." said Ridge as he settled everything in their rightful places. "We are?" asked Caroline surprised. "Yes we are. You look very pale and I think you could use some sun. I think I have some sun tan lotion stuffed somewhere in my pocket." said Ridge patting his pockets searching for the particular tube. "There here it is." said Ridge triumphantly. "You know, you amaze me sometimes." said Caroline shaking her head in disbelief.

"Well … What are we waiting for? Let's go take a dip." said Ridge as he grasped her hand and pulled her towards the water. "Wait … Aren't we forgetting something?" asked Caroline as she put her hands on her hips. With a totally innocent expression on his face, Ridge replied, "What?" "Our swimsuits." said Caroline exasperated. "Where are they?" demanded Caroline as she looked at Ridge. " Haven't you heard of skinny dipping?" asked Ridge with a mischievous gleam in his eyes. "Oh no…Oh no you don't." said Caroline edging away as Ridge advanced on her. Squealing loudly she ran a short distance with Ridge chasing behind. Finally he overtook her and pounced on her making her fall to her knees on the soft sand.

Laughingly he wrestled her to the ground and pinned her arms beside her head. Divesting her of her nightgown, he swung her on his shoulder like a cave man would. Carrying her towards the edge of the water, he lowered her to stand before him. When he rid himself of his clothing, they walked hand in hand into the water. The waves splashed on them and wetted them but they laughed aloud and played in the water. Keeping in mind that Caroline was not to be over excited, a while later Ridge grasped her hand and they both walked back towards the beach.

Flopping down on the rug, Ridge quickly wrapped a huge towel around Caroline before tying one around his waist. He had brought another smaller one, so he wrapped that around her head and proceeded to dry her hair. Her pale blond hair hung wetly down her back and Ridge gently rubbed the towel to it. Ridge's ministration made her feel rather queasy but she bit back her lower lip. When he finished, he turned towards the small table and poured them both a mug of hot coffee. Unable to contain that queasy feeling, Caroline quickly scrambled off her deck chair and ran towards the nearest bush. Ridge was right behind her as he again held her from behind and rubbed her back. Helping her back to her chair, he quickly grabbed the towel he was using to wipe her hair, and went toward the water. Wetting it thoroughly, he squeezed the excess water out and wiped Caroline's face with it gently.

"I'm sorry." said Caroline. "No honey. You've nothing to be sorry about. I guess we did too much, too soon. Besides, Dr. Hayes said you would be feeling like this often. Now don’t worry about a thing. I promised you I'd be there every second of the day. " said Ridge reassuring Caroline. Smiling weakly at him, she said," I guess so. Can I have some coffee please," asked Caroline. "Sure honey. You just sit back and relax. I'll get you some. Are you hungry? " asked Ridge. "No not very. Let me make you some breakfast later. For now let's just enjoy the morning sun." said Caroline as she accepted the mug Ridge placed in her hand.

For another hour or so, they lazed about in the sun without their clothes. Ridge sometimes helped her rub more lotion on her back and legs. Feeling totally unabashed lying about in the sun, they felt so free and peaceful. It was as if there was no one else in the world. They were so occupied with each other that they completely forgot that there was another world out there waiting for them. Ridge and Caroline were lying on the deck chairs placed under the shade of a large palm tree. Suddenly Caroline heard Ridge's stomach rumbling loudly. Opening one eye, she looked at him and smiled. " I think I better prepare you your breakfast." said Caroline getting up and wrapping the towel around herself. Her nightgown and robe were nowhere to be seen.

Smiling up at her, he said, " Yeah … I am rather hungry. Why don't you go on ahead back to the villa? I'll clear up here and then join you later." said Ridge as he got up and kissed Caroline on her cheek. Turning her head so her mouth fell on his, she kissed him back. "Ok, but hurry before your breakfast gets cold." said Caroline as she slowly made her way back to the villa. As she was climbing up the porch stairs, a wave of dizziness shook her but she was determined to overcome that feeling. Grasping the banister in her left hand, she pulled herself up the stairs toward their bedroom. Thinking that she'd take a shower first before starting breakfast she went into the bathroom and adjusted the shower so the water temperature was normal. All that suntan lotion was making her feel rather oily. Tossing her towel on the bed, she stepped into the shower stall humming a soft tune.

Ridge watched Caroline go into the villa. Then he quickly shook the blanket free of sand and folded it up neatly. He did the same to the comforter. Maybe they could use it again another night out in the open air. Piling everything on the small table, he folded up the deck chairs and leaned them against the tree trunk. Picking up the thermos in his arm, he noticed something white blowing about on the beach. Making his way towards the item, he realised that it was Caroline's nightgown. Her robe was missing but he chuckled to himself when he remembered the look on Caroline's face, when he suggested skinny-dipping. Grabbing everything up in his arms, he made his way into the villa and called out to Caroline. There was no answer but he could hear the shower running.

Making his way into their bedroom, he quickly tossed aside his towel and decided to join her in the shower. Taken by surprise, Caroline welcomed him into the circle of her arms.

Ridge grabbed the bar of soap and proceeded to wash every inch of her body. Feeling as if in a trance, Caroline lifted her head to meet his when he tried to capture her lips. Ridge placed a trail of butterfly kisses down her throat and ending at her belly. The hot water sluiced down on their shoulders as they made love then and there in the cramped shower stall. Union was rather awkward in that small place, so Ridge shut of the water and lifted Caroline into his arms.

He led her into the bedroom and placed her on the bed. Grabbing some clean towels from a cupboard he wiped her dry. Only when she was completely dry, did he wrap a towel around his waist and went looking for the hair drier. Hooking it to the power point, he brought it over to Caroline and dried her beautiful blond hair. Running his fingers through her sweet smelling soft hair, he placed a kiss on top of her head. Pushing her back gently on the pillows, he proceeded to make love to her again. Their lovemaking was slow and unhurried. Both wanting to give the other as much pleasures as they could. Totally spent and satisfied, they settled back into bed for a short nap.

It was almost a quarter to eleven when they were awakened by their rumbling stomachs.

"This time I better get you that breakfast I promised." said Caroline as scrambled out of bed and went towards the closet. Getting out of bed and making his way towards her, Ridge said, "I guess it is kind of late for breakfast. We better prepare brunch instead. Then we'll have more time later on for other activities." When Caroline turned around to look at him, he had a very naughty look on his face. Laughing at him, she quickly pulled on a sleeveless pink cotton top and a pair of white shorts. As Ridge tried to pull her back into bed, she grabbed a fluffy pillow from the bed and bopped him on the head. "I'll see you in the kitchen." shouted Caroline over her shoulder as she left the bedroom.

Ridge quickly changed into a pair of dark brown shorts and matched it with a cream coloured sleeveless T-shirt. The weather outside was bright and sunny and he wanted to take full advantage of it. Leaving the bedroom, he went into the kitchen to see what

Caroline was up to. She was kneeling in front of the refrigerator rummaging for something. When she straightened up, she was holding a can of soup and in her other hand was a loaf of bread. Suddenly she became aware of his presence and she turned to smile at him. "There seems to be a lot of food stocked up in here. What would you like?" asked Caroline. Bending his head to peer inside, Ridge just shrugged his shoulders and said, " Seeing that you want something light, why don’t we just heat up the soup, toast some bread and mix us a salad." " Good idea. I thing there's a bottle of fresh orange juice in here somewhere." said Caroline.

"Tell you what. I'll heat up the soup while you toast the bread. That way we'll finish faster." said Ridge as he headed of towards the stove. They worked well together and within the next half- hour they were seated at the breakfast nook enjoying their simple brunch.

After clearing up the remains of their brunch, Ridge pulled Caroline to the living room. Settling himself on an old beanbag, he pulled her to sit in front of him, between his legs. Surprised to find herself in that position, she was even more surprised when Ridge pulled out a bible. They spent at least an hour there with Ridge reading to her several chapters from the bible. Once he finished, he gently turned her around to face him. "Thank you for doing that, Ridge." said Caroline as she placed her palms against his cheek. " I promised you that we would pray together and I'm keeping my promise." replied Ridge as he smiled down at her.

Caroline was feeling rather tired so Ridge insisted on carrying her out to the hammock. He gently laid her down and stayed by her side until she fell asleep. Ridge noticed that recently her strength was getting weaker and weaker. She felt tired even after the slightest activity. What he knew was that she was nearing her time. He didn't want to believe that but all the signs were clearly visible. When he made sure that she was fast asleep, he slowly left her and took a short walk by the beach. The late afternoon wind was blowing strongly and the waves in the sea was splashing and beating the huge rocks on the beach. The motion of the sea water hitting the rocks was just the same as how Ridge felt inside. Looking upwards at the clear blue sky, Ridge yelled " Oh God … How could you do this to her. She never did you any harm. Take me and leave her be." Yelling his heart out in anger, he sank to his knees with his hands covering his face. Tears were pouring down his cheeks but he refused to wipe them.

It was several minutes later before Ridge slowly made his way back to the villa. Caroline was still asleep so he quietly made his way to the kitchen to prepare something for Caroline when she wakes up. He decided to boil some water to make tea and using all the left over bits of meat and salad, he made some sandwiches. Caroline's appetite was not very big, as she preferred a liquid diet. Solid food could not agree with her lately so he decided to heat up a can of soup. That was about all she could manage these days.

When he finished, he left the kitchen to wake Caroline.

Dinner wasn't a very good affair that day. When Ridge tried to wake Caroline up that evening, she complained that she didn't have the energy to even sit up. Her bones ached and she really felt sick to the stomach. Ridge began to worry. He carried Caroline back towards the master bedroom and laid her down on the sheets. He made her as comfortable as possible and left the room. Once in the living room, he took out his cell-phone and called Dr. Hayes. When he got her on the line, he told her about Caroline. "Ridge, I think you'd better bring her home. I must have a look at her. This sounds rather serious." said Dr. Hayes on the phone." I can bring her back, but I don't know about the journey." explained Ridge. "She'll have to make it Ridge, you better give her two of those pills I prescribed. Keep her as warm as possible. " said Dr. Hayes. " I'll come by the hospital as soon as I get back." said Ridge. " I'll see you then. Bye." said Dr. Hayes hanging up.

Making his way back towards the bedroom, he quickly checked up on Caroline. She was shivering slightly and her features were even paler than before. Rummaging in their suitcases, Ridge took out Caroline's wool slacks and a matching sweater. He divested Caroline of the T-shirt and shorts she was wearing and pulled on her slacks. Gently pulling her to sitting position, he helped her put on her sweater. Tucking her back into the bed, he quickly went into the kitchen. Filling up a hot water bottle he brought it back into the bedroom and tucked it beside Caroline. All the while, she didn't stir but she moaned slightly when Ridge was pulling on her clothes. " What's the matter, honey? Did I hurt you?" asked Ridge with concern. "No … It’s just that … It hurts when I move my arms or legs." whispered Caroline as she opened her eyes and looked at him.

" Don't worry about a thing, honey. It's all over now. Just lie back and rest. I'll be here with you." said Ridge. His voice was slightly cracking, as he could not bear to see Caroline hurting this way. He lay down beside her and very gently pulled her into his arms. Her head was on his chest and his arms were gently wrapped around her. He stroked back her hair and rubbed her back. Soon she fell back asleep. He stayed with her that way for a few hours. Every now and then he checked to see if she was still breathing. Ridge felt so afraid to leave her alone. It was almost two in the morning when he finally eased himself from the bed. Pulling the blanket under her chin, he quietly left the room.

In the kitchen he packed up some things which they might need on their way home. Filling two thermoses with hot coffee, he packed it into and old picnic basket that he found in one of the kitchen cabinets. Caroline's medications were also packed carefully and he stuffed in a few sandwiches, which he had prepared. Going outside he checked the car and filled up the back seat with some cushions. Knowing that the ride back home would be rather bumpy, he wanted Caroline to be as comfortable as possible. Their suitcases were dumped in the trunk and the picnic basket was placed in the front seat. After making sure everything was done, he went back to the room to check on Caroline.

She stirred slightly when he touched her cheek. Caroline opened her eyes and smiled at Ridge. When he placed his palm on her cheek, she covered his hand with hers and brought it towards her mouth to kiss his palm. " How are you feeling?" asked Ridge as he gathered her hands in his. " Not to good, Ridge. I'm really sorry…" she started to say but Ridge cut her off by saying," No … you've nothing to be sorry about. I love you." Bending down, Ridge placed a kiss on her forehead. "It won't be long now, Ridge" said Caroline in a soft whisper. "Don't say that, honey. I couldn't bear it." said Ridge as a tear slid down his cheek. Lifting her hand, she wiped it away with her finger and said, "Take me home Ridge. I want to be home in our bed." whispered Caroline. " We'll be home soon. We will be leaving first thing in the morning." said Ridge.

Getting up from her bedside, he went towards the dresser. Opening a drawer. He took out the bottle of pills Dr. Hayes had given him. Taking two out, he brought it to Caroline. He helped to sit up. Ridge held the glass of water while Caroline swallowed the pills. A drop of water trickled down her chin but Ridge wiped it away with his hand. Tucking her back into the bed, he said, " Try to sleep now. Think about our home. When you wake up, I promise you that you'll find yourself back in our own bed." said Ridge as he climbed into bed to settle himself beside Caroline. Smiling weakly, she said, " That sounds lovely. I'm so tired now." "Go to sleep then. I'll be by your side." whispered Ridge as he brushed back her hair from her forehead and placed a gentle kiss there.

It was nearly six in the morning, when Ridge carried a sleeping Caroline bundled in a blanket, towards the back seat of their car. After settling Caroline down carefully on the seat, Ridge arranged the cushions around her so she would knock her head in any case the car bumped. Caroline had complained that her limbs were painful. She felt that even the slightest touch made it hurt. Even moving around was becoming tiresome. Ridge had told her that, he would be happy to carry her around wherever she needed to go. They had talked till the wee hours of dawn, until the pills began to take effect and Caroline fell fast asleep. Now, Ridge was anxious to be on their way. After seeing to Caroline, Ridge locked up the villa and started up the car engine. The drive back home was smooth and they made it in good time. Ridge drove straight to the hospital. Dr Hayes and Brooke were waiting for him in her office. After doing a quick examination on Caroline, Dr. Hayes spoke to Ridge," There's nothing much I can do for her now, Ridge. If I give her more sedatives, she would grow weaker than she already is. The only thing you could do for her now is keep her comfortable." As Ridge gazed at a sleeping Caroline on the examination table, a tear slid down his cheek. He wiped it away with the back of his hand. Brooke, who was also in the room, had tears in her eyes. She walked over to Ridge and said, " Come on Ridge, let's take her home." She put her hand on his arm. He turned to look at her and she put her arms around him and hugged him as he broke down crying. Not wanting to intrude, Dr. Taylor Hayes quietly left the room. Brooke held on to Ridge as they both cried for Caroline.

Ridge carried Caroline back to the car. After settling her in, he turned to Brooke and said, " Logan, I think Caroline would want to see you today. Why don't you come by the house for dinner or something?" " Sure … I also think it's time the others knew about her condition." said Brooke looking at Ridge. He just gazed blankly at her and nodded. Getting into the car, he waved at Brooke and drove carefully back to their own place.

As Ridge pulled into the driveway of their guesthouse, Stephanie who was looking out of her bedroom window saw them. She saw Ridge gently carry a sleeping Caroline out from the car and go into their house. Rather surprised at seeing Caroline looking pale and limp in his arms, Stephanie quickly made her way downstairs. She intended to find out what was going on. Ridge had left the front door to his place open, so Stephanie walked into the room quietly. Ridge was putting Caroline to bed. He was pulling on a white silk night-gown over her head. Gently he tucked her under the sheets and settled himself on a chair beside her. His back was towards the door so he didn't see his mother standing there. Resting his elbows on the bed, he gazed at Caroline's beautiful face. Her skin was so pale and smooth. There were slight traces of tiny freckles on her cheeks. He remembered the day when she had told him that she hated the freckles on her face, he replied that freckles were the marks where the fairies had kissed her. She laughed at the fact that Ridge still believed in fairies. Those were the happy days they spent together.

To make her presence known, Stephanie cleared her throat. Ridge turned around surprised and saw his mother there. She quickly noted his dishevelled appearance and that his eyes were full of tears. He got up quietly, brushed the tears from his eyes and made his way towards her. " Ridge, what 's going on in here? You've been missing for two days and what's the matter with Caroline?" asked Stephanie. Pulling his mother towards the living room, he made her sit on the sofa and sat down next to her. He told his mother what Brooke and Dr. Hayes had told him a few days back. Shocked at hearing this, Stephanie clutched at her heart. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Holding Ridge in her arms they both cried for the fate of a beautiful young lady who was going to die even before her life had fully began.

"Ridge, you see to Caroline. I'll let the others know. Including Bill. I'm sure he'll want to see her. I'll handle him for you if you like." said Stephanie getting up from the sofa. She wiped her eyes with a tissue and turning to Ridge, she gave him a hug, then turned around to leave the guesthouse. Ridge heard a soft moan sounding from his bedroom. Quickly wiping his eyes, he made his way back to Caroline. She was trying to sit up as Ridge entered the room. "Hi … How are feeling?" asked Ridge sat on the edge of the bed and held her hands. Looking around at their room, she smiled weakly at him and said, "I'm home." "I promised you didn't I." said Ridge as he bent forward and gently kissed her on the lips.

"What time is it?" asked Caroline sleepily. " It's a little past noon. Feel like eating something." asked Ridge as he helped plump up the pillows behind Caroline so she could sit up in bed. " I am rather hungry. What about you?" said Caroline. "I'll ask Maria to send two trays of food. We'll eat here ok." said Ridge as he got up to give a call to the main house.

The afternoon sun was shining in through the windows but Caroline shivered slightly. Slowly easing herself from the bed, she stood up. She felt her body aches at any movement she made. Holding on to the bedpost, she took a step forward. A light dizzy feeling was there but she ignored it. Little by little she made her way to the clothes closet. Opening it, she picked out a bright yellow jump suit. While carrying her clothes towards the bed, Ridge walked into the room. She smiled weakly at him and said, "I think I need help dressing up." Putting down the tray he was carrying he went to her side and took the outfit from her hand. Helping her towards the bed, he made her sit down on the edge while he slowly eased the nightgown from her body. Noticing that she was shivering, he quickly pulled on the jump-suit as gently as possible. Bending down to look under the bed, he found her bedroom slippers and slid them on her feet. After handing her, her hairbrush, he quickly carried the food trays over to the small table in the corner of their room.

During lunch, they talked about Brooke. "Logan will coming by to see you today. I told her we were back." said Ridge. "That's sounds nice. She looks great these days. I think pregnancy really suits her." said Caroline. " Well actually, mother invited us all for dinner at the house tonight. Dad's going to be there too. We can cancel if you're not up to it." said Ridge looking at Caroline. She shook her head and replied, "No… No… Let's go. I'll be fine." They finished their lunch and after the maid had cleared everything up, Ridge led Caroline over to the sofa. Just as they sat down, the doorbell rang. Getting up, Ridge said, "I'll see who it is. Probably Logan."

Ridge returned a moment later with Bill Spencer, Caroline's father. Surprised at seeing her father, Caroline said," Dad, What are you doing here?" " I came to see you." said Bill as he sat down on the sofa and hugged his daughter. " I'll leave you two alone." said Ridge as he went out of the room.

Ridge left the guesthouse and went to the main house. Standing beside the huge parlour windows, he could a see a tearful Bill talking to his daughter. Although he couldn't hear what they were saying, but Ridge could tell that Bill found out about Caroline's condition and came to confront her. Not wanting to see much more, he left by the side entrance and went to the poolside. Sitting on the deck chairs there, he gazed at the clear blue water. Hearing sounds coming from the tennis court nearby, he got up to peer over the hedge. His sister Felicia was happily playing a game of tennis with her boyfriend Jake.

Not wanting to intrude on his sister's privacy, he left the pool area and decided to take a walk along the gardens in their mansion. He walked up to the entrance where the main gates were. There was a small fish pond and water fountain there. He sat down on a bench beside it. As he gazed at the water in the pond, he thought back about his life with Caroline. She was always so caring and loving. She never liked to hurt anyone or anything. Their life together these past six months were so perfect. They had even talked about building their own house and also about having a baby. Now, everything they'd ever planned for their future together was being destroyed little by little. He loved Caroline. He couldn't bear to see her suffer this way. His thoughts were disrupted by the sound of a car leaving the main gate. It was Caroline's father's car.

Not wanting to leave Caroline alone for long, he made his way back to the guesthouse. Caroline was still sitting on the sofa. Her face was stained with tears and he went towards her and put his arms around her shoulders. He held her while she cried. After a while, he put his finger beneath her chin and lifted her face to meet his gaze. " Dad wanted to take me away from here but I refused. He was so sad. He said he couldn't bear to lose another woman he loved. When my mom died, he was heart-broken. Now, I …" said Caroline. "Shh … Don't think like that. Your dad is strong. He will be able to handle it. He loves you just like I do. " explained Ridge. "He said he'll come by tomorrow morning to see me. He wants to spend some time alone with me." said Caroline. " I think that's a good idea. " said Ridge as he hugged his wife. "Ridge …" called Caroline softly. "Yes, honey"

" I want to be buried next to my mother. Will you see to that?" asked Caroline looking at him. Unable to say anything as he felt a lump in his throat, Ridge just nodded his head and held her even more tightly.

It was nearly five o' clock in the evening when Ridge quietly slid out of bed and made his way to the bathroom to shower and shave. Caroline was still sleeping soundly. After their talk that afternoon, she said she was feeling drained out of energy and wanted to rest up so she'd feel better and be able to attend dinner. Ridge agreed and they had both slept as the night before, Ridge had little sleep. After showering, he changed into something casual for dinner. He decided to wear his brown khaki trousers and matched it with a cream coloured knit shirt. As he was brushing his hair, the door bell sounded. Caroline awoke abruptly when she heard the sound but Ridge motioned for her to stay in bed while he answered it.

A few minutes later, he walked into the room with Brooke following him. Smiling down at her, Brooke went to sit beside her on the bed and hugged her. " How are you feeling this evening?" asked Brooke concerned. " Much better. I feel more rested and able to tackle dinner tonight." said Caroline. " Why don't I leave you two ladies alone for a while to get ready for dinner." interrupted Ridge as he made his way over to Caroline. Bending down, he kissed her gently on the forehead and left the room.

Assisting Caroline out of bed, Brooke said, "Why don't I help you pick out something for dinner while you shower quickly.?" "Thanks." said Caroline as she slowly got out of bed and went into the bathroom. When Brooke heard the shower going, she walked over to Caroline's closet and picked out a lovely blue silk dress. Moments later, Caroline walked into the room, dressed in her bathrobe. " I don't think I have the energy to dress and put on make up. I think up used it all up while showering." said Caroline as she sat on a bench in front of her dressing table. "Don't worry about a thing. I'm here. I'll help you.," said Brooke as she made her way over to Caroline and hugged her from behind. They spent a fun evening together as Brooke helped Caroline dress and lightly applied make-up for her. When they were both ready, they left the room to meet the others at the dining room in the main house.

Most of the Foresters were present. Thorne and Felicia were also there as Caroline sat down next to Ridge. Brooke was sitting opposite her and Eric and Stephanie were seated on the opposite ends of the table. Dinner was served but Caroline just pushed her food around her plate. She barely ate a few mouthfuls although the food was delicious. Caroline didn't want the others to notice that she wasn't eating so she just took a few spoonfuls of everything. What she didn’t know was, Stephanie has already informed the others about Caroline condition and also how she didn't want the others finding out about herself. So, they had kept quiet and just maintained light conversation throughout dinner.

After dinner, they adjourned to the sitting room for coffee. Thorne was standing beside the stereo as Caroline approached him. "Why don't you put on some music so we could all dance together.?" said Caroline. "Sure, but you must promise to have the first dance with me.," said Thorne smiling down at her. Felicia had left the room after dinner to meet with Jake so Caroline decided to build up the pairs. She asked Eric to dance with Stephanie while Brooke danced with Ridge. She and Thorne made up the last couple. Not wanting to disappoint her wishes the Foresters all agreed. While dancing with Thorne, Caroline felt her head spinning. She collapsed against Thorne who was holding her. All the others stopped dancing as Ridge quickly made his way towards her. Brooke passed him a glass of water to sprinkle on Caroline as she had fainted. He dipped his fingers in the water and sprinkled a few drops on her face. She lightly opened her eyes to look at him but did not have the energy to get up. All the others had tears in their eyes as Ridge gently lifted his wife into his arms and carried her towards the guest house.

Ridge carried her into their bedroom and set her down gently on the bed. He undressed her and pulled on a pale peach nightgown over her head. After wiping the make-up on her face with a damp face towel, he climbed into bed and held Caroline in his arms. She stirred slightly and put her arms around his waist. Resting her head on his chest, she heard his heart beating strongly. Ridge bent down and kissed her on her lips. She whispered," I love you, Ridge." He answered, " I love you too, honey. I'll always love you."

That night the wind outside was blowing. The moon was shining and it cast a dim glow on Ridge and Caroline sleeping on the bed. It was close to midnight when Ridge discovered that Caroline had stopped breathing.

Gently easing her head down onto the pillow, Ridge held Caroline's body in his arms and wept. He held her and rocked her gently in his arms as the tears from his eyes fell down his cheeks. When there were no more tears left, he held Caroline's face in his hands and pushed back the hair from her forehead as he kissed her there. He pulled the blanket around them as he held his wife close. A while later he reached for the bedside phone and alerted the main house.

The next day

Caroline would have been proud of the turnout thought Ridge as he stood by her gravesite late in the afternoon. As she had asked him to do, he buried her next to her mother. Dozens of bouquets of flowers were all around. The funeral service that morning had been full of family and friends. Ridge had hardly heard a word the priest had said. Caroline was laid in an open casket. Ridge had insisted on dressing her in her wedding gown. Lying there in the casket, she had looked so peaceful. Almost as if she were fast asleep. He felt like she would wake up any minute and smile at him. When the casket had finally been closed and carried out to the funeral plot, Ridge laid down a single stem of a white rose. So perfect. So beautiful. So fragile. Just like Caroline. He hadn't shed a single tear since last night. All around Caroline's grave, Ridge had asked six rose bushes to be planted. Each bush would bear beautiful white roses.

It was almost six in the evening when Ridge had finally left Caroline's grave site. His family had all extended their condolences but he hadn't heard a word they said. No one knew Caroline as much as he did. No one loved her as much as he did. Now, as he stepped into the guesthouse, which was their home for six wonderful months, he felt a strange emptiness. Everything that belonged to Caroline was left just as it was. The nightgown she wore last night was draped across the foot of the bed. The blue dress was hung neatly in a hanger, ready to be sent of for dry-cleaning, her toothbrush was next to his in the bathroom, all her make-up articles were strewn over the dresser top. Caroline was his life and now that life was taken away from him. He sat down in the corner of their room, holding their wedding bands in his palm. The dam that was holding back his tears broke and he wept for the loss of his wife. A woman whom he loved and cherished.

That night he left the guesthouse. He locked it up and went to his old room back in the main house. The only thing he took with him was their wedding photograph ,an album filled with their photos and his memories of her. He left instructions with the maid, that no one was to ever enter the guesthouse or use it. Nothing was to be removed or touched.

A few months later

Ridge sat on the edge of his bed. It was more than four months since Caroline had passed away. He missed her a lot. Lately he had been attending some sessions with Caroline's doctor, Dr. Taylor Hayes. She had helped him a lot during these last few months. They had formed a relationship together but Ridge was a bit reluctant to take it a bit further. He still thought of Caroline. Pulling open the drawer by his bedside, he took out the silver photo frame which contained their wedding photograph. He ran his hand over the photo and suddenly felt a strange unevenness. There was something beneath the picture. Turning it backwards he undid the catch that held the photo in place. A square piece of paper fell on his lap. Ridge picked it up. It was a letter from Caroline. This was what it said:

 My Darling Ridge,

By the time you find this letter, I assume you are thinking about our marriage and also about your future. Wherever you are, please know that I am by your side in whatever you pursue. You and I shared a special bond together that no one can ever break or equal. We shared something so precious, so treasured, and so beautiful. My love for you will only end when the day comes where the ocean doesn't touch the sea. Till then we will always be together in our thoughts and in our dreams. I wish with all my heart that I could spend my lifetime with you. I want to share every moment with you and become one with you. You are the only man that I have ever loved with all my heart. I am glad of one thing though. You will always remember me as young and carefree. In your heart and in your mind I will never grow old.

There is only one thing that I want you to do for me at this time. I want you to carry on living. You have a whole future ahead of you. Don't waste it. Don't keep me on a pedestal. I will forever be in your heart, your thoughts, your memories and in your mind. I don't mean for you to forget what we had but I do wish to see you happy. I want you to live, my darling. Live life to the fullest. May you find that special someone to share it with.

Don't think twice Ridge, go ahead and pursue her. I give you all my love and my blessings. Please Ridge, fulfil my wish. Know that till this day and for every day you live, I will always love you with all my heart and all my soul.

I Love You, Ridge … Forever.

 All my love,

Caroline

Ridge's eyes were filled with tears as he read that letter. Holding it against his chest he wept. A while later, he neatly folded that letter and put it back where he found it. Taking the frame that contained their wedding photograph and Caroline's letter, he wrapped it in a silk handkerchief that belonged to Caroline. Leaving his room, he went to the guesthouse which had been closed for many months. Unlocking the door, Ridge stepped in. The air was musty and a thin film of dust had settled over all the furniture. Caroline's things were left just as the day she had died. Sitting down at his old desk, he opened the drawer and took out a piece of paper and an envelope. Ridge was sat down in that room for almost an hour, writing something on the paper. Occasionally he would wipe the tears that fell down his cheek. This was what he wrote :

 Dear Caroline,

It's been so long since I've held you in my arms. I miss holding you. I miss ruffling your beautiful hair; I miss kissing your lips but most of all … I miss you. There are nights when I wake up thinking you're sleeping next to me, but all I feel is an empty cold sheet. I never thought I'd miss you this much. I never wanted to let you go. I just want to hold you in my arms forever and keep you safe from harm. Destiny took you away from me. Some might say it was fate. If you were here with me, I'd never let anyone or anything take you away from me ever again. People say that time heals. I want to believe that. You know what I miss the most about you… your positive attitude. You always believed in my ability, you trusted me wholeheartedly, you loved me till the very end. You were strong even when you found out about yourself. You wanted to protect me even then. No man could have ever asked for a better wife. My only regret is, I wasn't there for you when you needed me the most. I would have stood by you and calmed your fears. I would comfort you and wipe away all your tears. The last moments we spent together were the best days in my life. I will always remember them.

Now would have been the time we would have moved in our new house. I can see us sitting by the fireplace holding each other close and talking about the future. I read the letter you tucked into our wedding photograph frame. The reason I looked there was because I've met someone. I guess you would have liked her. She was your physician. Her name is Taylor. She has helped me deal with what has happened so far. Without her help I would be lost. I've begun to think about our future together. I care about her deeply and I really want to begin my life all over again. You were my yesterday but she is my tomorrow. Please remember that I will never forget you. As you have asked, I am moving on in my life. You were my past. A past I will never ever forget. I am going towards my future now.

Rest In Peace My Darling Caroline … Rest in Peace.

 Yours For Always,

Ridge

Taking the letter he had written, he sealed in a white envelope. He put the letter in his pocket and made his way to the main house. He gave instructions to the maids there to clean up the guesthouse. He wanted them to take all Caroline's clothes and other things to the attic and place them in a huge trunk. After that, he took the car and drove out to the place where Caroline was buried. The rose bushes were beautifully surrounding her gravesite. White roses were strewn all over her grave. Kneeling beside her grave, he pushed aside a mound of sand, which was covering her grave. He placed the letter there and buried it with more sand. On top of it, he placed a single stem of a white rose.

Ridge whispered," Good bye my love. Rest In Peace. "
